In her Railway Study Forum presidential address delivered online on 1 October, Jacqueline Starr of the Rail Delivery Group said that we must see Coronavirus as a reason for change, not an excuse for delay: rail has come through wars and depressions all the stronger for having the best people.
She was supported by young professionals Amal Makki, Layla Fazal and Lucy Harper who enthused about rail's environmental credentials, customer experience and diversity, with scope for repurposing stations as community assets.
Rail now has a new competitor called Working From Home, so the focus may have to switch from commuting to promoting leisure journeys.
