Ed Sweeney has been Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Heriot-Watt University since 2021. He was appointed Deputy Executive Dean in the University's School of Social Sciences in 2023. His expertise is in supply chain design and reengineering, with a particular emphasis on the drive towards net zero processes.

Ed joined Heriot-Watt from Aston University in Birmingham where he was appointed Professor of Logistics and Systems in 2014. An engineer by background, he holds academic qualifications from the Universities of Dublin, Warwick and Hull. He has worked in the automotive, life sciences and logistics sectors in a variety of capacities and in a number of different countries.

Ed has been active in the CILT for many years. He was the inaugural winner of the CILT (Ireland) "Member of the Year" award in 2014 and was chair of the CILT (UK) Logistics Research Network (LRN) Forum from 2016 to 2022. Prior to relocating to Scotland, he was an active member of the CILT West Midlands Region Committee.

In his spare time Ed regularly attends a variety of cultural and sporting venues. His cultural interests include opera, classical and other musical genres, theatre and poetry. Ed is a supporter of the Ireland and Leinster rugby union teams. He is also a Fellow of the RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) and a member of the Delius Society.
