The Archives are arranged by decade and then by individual year. For example, clicking on "The 1920's" will take you to page from where you can select each year and this will enable you to access the pages for each meeting and event.

Why these archives?

Simply put, if these had not been turned into an electronic format, they would have been lost forever. All of the records from 1928 until the 1960's were handwritten in minute books, although the 1928 and some 1929 records exist as typed sheets. The late 1960's and 1970's records are typed sheets pasted into a large minute book. Thereafter the original records exist as loose typed sheets. From the late 1980's until the end of the Section in 1999, all records exist in electronic format only and these have been preserved here.

As some of the records exist as loose sheets and given the number of moves the records made, particularly during the latter part of the 1980's and 1990's some of the records are missing and are unlikely to be found. Many records were disposed of during the great re-organisations in the transport industry in the late 1980's and early 1990's as office space was at a premium and Institute files were not considered to be important enough to keep.

In order to preserve this piece of Scottish Transport history, the then Secretary of the Scottish Section, John Fender, began to digitise the records in 1993 by typing the original handwritten records into his word processor. By that time he was keeping all records in an electronic format and thought it would be a good idea to extend new technology to the old records. The task took almost two years. The electronic records languished on his computer hard disk until the first archive website began construction in 1999, but this did not progress too far as domestic and work comittments severely constrained the time needed. It was not until early 2003 that work resumed in earnest and this is the result.
