Day, Date & Time:Wednesday 23 February 2022
(1745 for 1800)
Venue:Online Webinar
Topic & Speaker:"South to North and back again, reflections of a renegade transport co-ordinator" by John Carr

A graduate of the University of Leeds with over 40 years' experience throughout England, Scotland and beyond, John Carr is a market-oriented advocate for best practice in public transport and increasing public transport use within integrated mobility policies. This talk will reflect on what John would tell his younger self in the light of what he knows now, and on how he sees things evolving over the next 40 years.

The title reflects John's birth - by accident of war - on the Isle of Sheppey, his childhood in North West and North East England, where his love of railways matured into academic and professional interest in transport generally at Leeds University. A year in London preceded a return to Leeds. It was then onto Strathclyde where he had "the best job in public transport anywhere at the time". Fate took him back West Yorkshire with spells advising in Parliament during the passage of Bills that became the Transport Act 1985 and the Railways Act 1993

John will draw on some highlights from a varied and highly satisfying career that he believes show the necessity of having senior public officials with an understanding of transport and its close relationship with planning, the environment and social policies. This is thrown into sharp focus by experience in England over recent years.
