|Topic & Speaker:||"Russian Railways - past, present and future" by David Shirres|
JSC Russian Railways is a Russian vertically integrated company, both managing infrastructure and operating freight and passenger train services. In 2012 it became one of the three largest transport companies in the world. In his role as a correspondent for Rail Engineer, David Shirres has become a frequent visitor to Russia, where the authorities have given him privileged access to their mighty and diverse network stretching from the Baltic to the Pacific that includes the world's most northerly station.
After a slow start Russian railway network expanded under the Tsars. Its railway played a crucial role in both World Wars, the Russian Revolution and in the development of the Soviet economy. Today Russia's railways are a modern business that is increasingly aligned to China. As a result there are plans for a high-speed rail corridor between Moscow and Bejing by 2030.
