Day, Date & Time:Thursday 29 October 2020
1800 - 1900
(Login from 1730)
Venue:Zoom
Topic & Speaker:Decarbonising long haul road freight: opportunities and challenges with Alan McKinnon, Professor of Logistics, Kuehne Logistics University, Hamburg

Event Details: It is generally acknowledged that the movement of freight in heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will be difficult to decarbonise. It accounts for around 16% of CO2 emissions from transport in the UK and has an average carbon intensity 3-4 times higher than that of rail. This talk will examine the technical and managerial options for cutting CO2 emissions from HGVs, summarising the results of recent research and reviewing initiatives in the UK and other countries. The options fall into four categories: reducing lorry kilometres, improving vehicle load factors, increasing energy efficiency and switching to lower carbon energy sources. Full deployment of a broad set of measures offers the potential to achieve zero-carbon long haul freight by 2050.
